Durres

Durres

Things to do - general

Located about 33 Km away from the capital and at the coast of the Adriatic Sea, it is the second largest city in Albania. It has been home of emperors and gladiators in antiquity; of other important figures throughout the history; visited by apostles and host of main  cultural events of nowadays Albania, it is obvious that Durres posses a great value for the country.

History-wise, it is one of the oldest cities of Albania, founded by Epidamnos in 627 BC. It can be compared with similar large European cities of the antiquity and middle ages. During the ruling of Skanderbeg, Durres was considered as “the 2nd Constantinople”, due to the fact that became a major trading centre and port on the eastern coast of the Adriatic

It used to be the capital from 7 March 1914 until 1920, under the ruling of the Austrian prince, William of Albania. In 1939, it was the first city to be concquered by the Italian Fascists

After World War II, Durres was transformed into an industrial city, and it became an important cultural and educational centre.Durrës was the scene of many demonstrations during the democratic movement of 1990–1991.  Durres has many parks and gardens, and an outdoor theater has been built on the hills above the city. Its main recreational areas are Durrës Beach and Currila Beach, where citizens and tourists enjoy the sea and yellow sand of the Adriatic.

Durres is as much a cultural hub as it is a tourist destination. While the city presents ample opportunity for enjoying the dazzling combination of sun and sand, its archaeological treasures offer a glimpse into the city’s rich history. The city nowadays is located exactly on the ancient ruins. To not miss are The Roman Amphitheater,  The Roman Baths, The Archaeological Museum, The Mosaic of Orpheus, The Venetian Tower, Fatih Mosque, King Zog I Residence etc.

Durres has a strategical and economical importance to the country, being the largest port of Albania and, especially for the proximity with Italian city ports, such as Bari. It also is an important contributor in tourism, welcoming every year visitors not only from Albania and Kosovo, but from all over the world.

Durres Amphitheatre is a unique public monument in

of ancient times and the work of local masters. It was built in the beginning of the II century, at the time of Roman emperor Trajan
(98 - 117). It had around 15 - 20 thousand seats for spectators,
attending matches between gladiators.
The main entrance was situated north and a south
exit on the same axis. The eastern façade faced the
city center and was a double-decker with columns
and arches on to a decorative structure with
windows.

The Baths of Roman period were built in the first
years of the 2nd Century A.D. allocated in the centre
(under the Palace “Alexander Moisiu”) was discovered
almost completely in 1960.
Form its size and the inner ambient it has been part
of the city gymnasium. In what has been preserved

the rooms. At first is the apodyterium (dressing
room), followed by the tepidarium (sweating room)
which is under the hypocaust brick floor letting the
hot steam pass. Ongoing in the southern direction is
the frigidarium (rooms with cold water) and finally
the pools. Laying the floor are marble tiles, in a black
and white chessboard form. Southwest of the
roman baths, is located a complex discharge channel
on the main road of the Roman period in the northern
direction.

The Venetian Tower
The circular tower (locally called “The Tower”), was
built in the XV century on a Byzantine tower. This is
evidenced by the presence of blocks from previous
fences, and architectural fragments of ancient
reliefs. The tower has a diameter of 16m and a
height of 9m. You enter the tower through arched
gate made of bricks. The tower is equipped with 5
turrets and 3 compartments (alcoves). The perimeter
above closes in battlements. The interior is built
with bricks to form a dome. A staircase in stone is
found within, with steep and narrow steps.

The Archaeological Museum was
inaugurated on 13 April 2002 on the
basis of materials of archaeological
museum first opened on March 13,
1951. The exhibition is organized
into three wards according to historical
periods. The first Hall begins with prehistoric
finds in the window of the city and its surrounding
areas. In a chronological order it’s followed without
interruption the Illyrian history of the town’s archaic,
classical periods up to the I-st century B.C.. Ongoing
unfolds the topographic, economic, political and
cultural developments of the Roman Dyrrachium. In
thematic terms, this city proves the presence of an
Illyrian population with a rich spiritual world. Durres
appears as a centre for a multi- branched economy
and traded with many other Mediterranean
centres. The Middle Ages section includes 15 centuries
from V - XV and closes with the Turkish period.
