Itinerary

1

07:00 — Tirana to Gjirokastër — ~3 hours

Your day starts early in Tirana. Settle in for the roughly three-hour drive south, arriving at around 10:00.

2

Gjirokastër Castle

Begin at the landmark that dominates the city skyline. One of the largest castles in the Balkans, it offers wide views across the Drino valley, and inside you can explore the museum and the fortress's military history.

3

Taste Gjirokastër's local cuisine

Break for lunch at one of the recommended local restaurants such as Kodra, Edua or Taverna Tradicionale. This is your chance to try regional specialities such as qifqi, the herb-filled rice balls, or bakllasarëm. (Restaurant costs not included.)

4

Walk through the Old Bazaar

Cobblestone streets lined with small shops selling handmade crafts, textiles and souvenirs, in one of the most characteristic parts of Gjirokastër.

5

Step inside Skenduli House

A beautifully preserved Ottoman-era residence that shows how the city's historic homes were designed and lived in, with traditional furnishings, carpets and details dating back to the 19th century.

6

The Ethnographic Museum

Finish your sightseeing at the museum built on the site of the birthplace of Enver Hoxha. Its collection presents traditional Albanian clothing, household objects and elements of everyday life from the region.

7
