UNESCO towns, Roman ruins, mountain castles and the coast, all within reach of the capital
Tirana is a compelling city in its own right, but its greatest advantage may be its position. Within a couple of hours' drive you can reach UNESCO World Heritage towns, Roman ruins, mountain castles and the Adriatic coast. These are the eight day trips most worth your time.
From Tirana: 120 km, about 2 hours · Best for: culture, architecture, photography
Berat is one of Albania's oldest towns, with a history stretching back to the 4th century BC. Its Ottoman-era houses climb the hillside in tiers, their wide windows giving the town its nickname. A full day allows time for the castle and its Byzantine churches, the Onufri Museum of religious icons, the Ethnographic Museum, and a walk through the Mangalem and Gorica quarters on either side of the Osum river.
Berat day tour from €59 per person.
From Tirana: 230 km, 3.5–4 hours · Best for: history, Ottoman architecture, literature
A UNESCO World Heritage Site and the birthplace of the writer Ismail Kadare, Gjirokastër is built almost entirely from stone. Its hilltop castle houses an armaments museum and looks out over the Drino valley, while the old bazaar below has changed remarkably little in centuries. It is the longest drive on this list, so it makes a full day.
Gjirokastër day tour from €79 per person.

From Tirana: 35 km, about 45 minutes · Best for: history, shopping, a shorter day out
Krujë was the base from which Albania's national hero, Skanderbeg, held off Ottoman armies for decades. The castle complex contains the Skanderbeg Museum, and the old bazaar leading up to it is one of the oldest in the country, a good place for handmade textiles, silver and antiques.
Krujë day tour from €49 per person.
From Tirana: about 100 km, 1.5–2 hours · Best for: nature, the lake, photography
Shkodër sits beside the largest lake in the Balkans and is the entry point to the Albanian Alps. Rozafa Castle looks down on the meeting of three rivers, and the Marubi National Museum of Photography holds one of the most important photographic archives in the region.
Shkodër day tour from €59 per person.
From Tirana: about 40 km, 45 minutes · Best for: ancient history, a beach afternoon
Durrës is home to one of the largest Roman amphitheatres in the Balkans, built in the 2nd century AD and still only partly excavated. Byzantine walls, a Venetian tower and a long seafront promenade make it an easy and varied half or full day.
Durrës day tour from €49 per person.
From Tirana: 150 km, 2–2.5 hours · Best for: coastline, independence history
Vlorë is where the Adriatic meets the Ionian, and where Albania declared independence in 1912. It is also the gateway to the Karaburun peninsula and the start of the Riviera coastline.
Vlorë day tour from €69 per person.
From Tirana: about 180 km, roughly 3 hours · Best for: café culture, museums, a quieter pace
Korçë has a character all its own: wide boulevards, a strong café tradition, the first school to teach in the Albanian language (opened in 1887), and the Resurrection Cathedral. Fewer visitors reach it, which is part of its appeal.
The Korçë day tour is priced on request.

From Tirana: about 290 km, 5 hours · Best for: beaches, UNESCO archaeology
Ksamil's small islands sit in some of the clearest water on the Albanian coast, and a few minutes away lies Butrint, an archaeological park with Greek, Roman, Byzantine and Venetian layers in a single site. This is the one trip on the list that is too far for a return day from Tirana. Our Ksamil & Butrint tour runs as a full day from Sarandë, so plan it as two days: a transfer to Sarandë (from €199 per car), an overnight stay, then the tour.
Every Travel in Albania day trip includes hotel pickup and drop-off in Tirana, a private vehicle and an English-speaking driver-guide. Groups are private, so the pace is yours: more time at the castle, a longer lunch, an extra stop for photographs. The prices above are per person, from; the full price is for the whole group, and you will see it before you book. Here is exactly what is included.
For a first visit, Berat. It is about two hours away, it is a UNESCO World Heritage town, and a single day is enough to see the castle, the museums and the old quarters without rushing.
